THE MOTHER OF ALL PS3 FAQ QUESTIONS: HOW DO I DO SHIT IN THE XMB?
Before you try to ask how to do ANYTHING in the XMB, press Triangle. I'm dead serious. 95% of questions can be answered by simply pressing Triangle and playing around with the menus. If you've already tried pressing Triangle to try and solve your XMB dilemma, then ask in the thread.

   * Current PS3 Models
     Currently the PS3 has two models available new on the Market, the 40gb, and the 80gb. While they have minor differences, the one difference of note (besides price) is that the 40gb model lacks PS2 backwards compatibility. The differences are covered in more detail later. Discontinued 60gb and 20gb models are available online in some places. Read on to find out more about them as well.

   * Blu-ray Playback?!
     If you're interested in watching HD movies on Blu-ray, the PS3 (any version) is currently the best value for your money. Priced similarly to other comparable players it offers an internal hard drive for data storage, and internet connection for BD-Live, and DivX playback. Basically, it's the best blu-ray player on the market, and feature updates have kept it consistently so. Movies play in up to 1080p over component and HDMI, though around 2012 studios will have the option of restricting full HD to HDCP secured HDMI connections only. No disc currently does, and hopefully it won't come to pass, as it's frivolous to bootleggers anyways.

   * What is Folding@home?
     Folding@home is a distributed computing project headed up by Stanford College. The essentials of the project boil down to using your hardware's spare time to do calculations for medical reasearch to help stop diseases. In other words use your PS3 to (theoretically) help stop cancer. The Folding@home client is present on the XMB, and once installed you can hit triangle to have it run whenever your PS3 is just idling.

   * What the is the best Bluetooth headset for all my voice needs?
     The general goon recommended headset is the Jabra BT125. This came in the Warhawk bundle, and can be found cheap online. You can google around for it and find it generally around $20. The older PS2 wired USB headset works as well. I personally have both, and have no problems at all. I think people who review shit on Amazon are generally idiots anyways.

   * What's This I Hear about Keyboard & Mouse?
     That's right, the PS3 allows any game that chooses to implement it to use Keyboard and Mouse controls. Unreal Tournament 3 supports it. Now, many games have chosen not to as well, for fear of the game being unbalanced. However, that won't stop you on a PS3!

     Meet the Splitfish Frag FX. The Frag FX is a mouse and nunchuck combo which will make you feel like you welded a Wiimote to your Mouse, in a good way. It can be used on ANY PS3 game at all, and has fully customizable firmware, allowing you to tweak sensitivity and button mappings to your liking. The build quality is solid, and many goons swear by it. The elitist COD4 top scorers love it too if that means something to you.

   * How the do I make a PSN account for another region? / Why would I?
     The PS Store is specific to region, so items in the NA store won't show up in the JPN store, and vice versa. If you want something that's JPN only, or want to use the NA store in the EU, go here for help setting up an account for another region.

   * FUCK ALL ASSHOLES WHO ARE ASSHOLES ON THE PLAYSTATION NETWORK HOW DO I REPORT THEM
     Travel on to here: http://np.us.playstation.com/compla...plaintForm.aspx

   * What the shit is with all these new PS3's can they play PS2 games oh god what the fuck
     Chemmy made a nice little chart to explain this whole thing: [http://www.omgpliable.com/SA/ps3/ps3chart.png]

     All PS3s however can play PS1 games perfectly. The NTSC region 20GB and 60GB consoles have both the Emotion Engine (the Playstation 2 CPU) and Graphics Synthesizer (the Playstation 2 GPU), yielding the highest backwards compatibility rate (around 98%). The PAL region 60GB and NTSC 80GB consoles do not have the Emotion Engine, but they do have the Graphics Synthesizer, yielding a good backwards compatibility rate, but not as good as the EE + GS consoles (above 90%). The 40GB PS3's (PAL and NTSC) do not include either of these chips.

   * I'm an anxious fuck and would like to know when the PSN store updates please
     Updates are usually pushed out every Thursday, anywhere between 1pm and 5pm PST.

   * Word on the street is that you can use the PS3 controller on a fucking PC. Confirm/deny
     Confirm. You can use the simpler Gamesaike SIXAXIS driver if you prefer the low-hassle method. It is hard to find however... Here, enjoy: just because I love you
     http://www.sendspace.com/file/jqqnn0

     The installer makes an entry in the start menu. Simply plug in the controller and run it. No need to mess with lib-usb bullshit .

     However, if that doesn't work for you for whatever reason, sirchode provided earlier driver files for us, and a nifty explanation on how to use it.
     sirchode posted:

         You'll need these two files:

         http://chode.org/misc/sixaxis/

         Install the .exe and then unpack the zip file to a directory. Go into the control panel and into the Gaming Options menu. Plug your Sixaxis into the computer and you should see it in the list of controllers, double-click it and you'll see a calibration test or something. Wiggle the analog sticks and nothing should happen at this point. Run the .exe that was in the zip file, press the PlayStation button and wiggle the sticks again to see if it worked. If it didn't, run that .exe again and again and again and again until you get it working, making sure to press the PS button each time. I verified that it works in ZSNES so have fun

   * You can still get full HD without HDMI dammit
     Both component and DVI will allow 720p/1080p signals for games if your TV supports it. The only catch is that Blu-Ray movies will eventually (in 2012) have the option to require HDMI on a per-disc basis. For games, your trusty PS2 component cables will work just fine -- for that matter all PS2 cables will work. However, if you are using an HDMI cable, it needs to be connected to a HDCP-compliant device or you'll get no video/audio. If your TV doesn't support HDCP via HDMI/DVI, you'll have to use one of the above-mentioned connections.

   * What's the cheapest place for HDMI cables? They're a fuckload of money in normal retailers!
     Right here. Unless you have your PS3 30 feet or more away from your system, it doesn't matter what gauge you get. I personally got a 6ft 24AWG gold plated cable with a net jacket, but when I actually received it, I realized it was overkill. A 6ft 28AWG cable would be perfectly fine.

   * Overheating issues are very fucking rare
     Enclosing the thing in some kind of carpet tortilla aside, the PS3 not only runs nearly silent, but after having the system on for a good 10 hours, it was still cool to the touch on either side. The system does a wonderful job of shunting heat out all those little vents you see on the top/back (that, however, was quite warm). It's almost scary how cool the system runs considering the kind of power it draws.

   * The PS3 does not currently upscale every PS3 game.
     For most current games, the PS3 sticks you with one output resolution and downscales anything if you have it set higher. This means if you've got an older HDTV that's locked at 1080i, and the game only outputs at 720p, you're going to be playing games at 480i.

     This is changing; many games now will at least scale the picture to another resolution, and some are having support patched in. Bear in mind that this is only stretching the original picture in a lot of cases unless the developer actually coded with multiple resolutions in mind. Some, like Namco, do, but it's the exception, not the rule.

   * As of the 1.8 firmware update, all PS2/PS one games will fucking upscale all the way to 1080p if you so choose. DVD's will upscale also, but ONLY through HDMI. It's not always pretty, and it seems most find luck with adjusting the new options for smearing a little blur on the screen as well as upscaling but hey, it's finally there, and may well still improve in the future.

     Another resource regarding this issue:
     Official PlayStation Forums

   * External hard drives and fucking iPods
     It's probably important to note that nearly any FAT32/FAT-formatted drive is readable by the PS3. The catch? You'll have to either store the files in GAME/MOVIE/MUSIC folders nested under a PS3 folder in the root of the drive or, you can press Triangle and select View All from the menu there to get the proper directory structure.

     Bear in mind that with iPods, you'll still have to deal with Apple's retarded directory structure, meaning you'll probably never find a full album in a single folder, but hey, at least you can view the file names. It's also important to note that iPods need to be PC formatted. Mac iPods won't work, sadly.

   * If you'd like to know what PS2/PS1 games work on your PS3 (especially now that various kinds of PS3's are out in the wild), click on the links below in your respective area to find this out:

     North American PS3's
     European Union PS3's
     Japanese PS3's

     Compatibility is generally excellent with only a few exceptions, and improves with nearly every firmware update. Also, even the most minor of glitches can remove the game from the above lists, so Google it or ask if you see a title missing.

   * For Windows Users
     With the 1.80 firmware, Sony added a little treat that no one was expecting: instant and simple support for Digital Living Network Alliance clients. Since that link there probably won't explain things too well at first, here's the gist of it: any compatible DLNA servers share content with other DLNA clients, and the list of actual servers/clients is fairly huge. The good news? You can make just about any computer a DLNA with the proper software. Amazingly, the most effective way to do this seems to be with the only major option out there that's free: TVersity. Go figure.

     If you need to get this stuff setup and running, the basics are:
     1. Be on the same network
     2. Enable Media Server Connections on you PS3 (Under Network Settings)
     3. Run any DLNA compatible media server on a PC in your network

     In most cases this just means downloading TVersity and CCCP, installing it, and going from there. More advanced users might use K-lite Codec Pack for compatibility reasons.

     For more detail head to the PS3 Video Streaming Thread

     Follow those instructions and you should be set. From there, it's as simple as setting up the media you want to share and presto, TVersity will transcode everything and you'll be watchin' flicks on your PS3 in no time. TV shows in particular are quite awesome to watch this way, I must admit, but music is just as cool, and remember, this does work with Remote Play, so if you've got your PSP up to 3.50, you can watch anything on your network from anywhere there's a Wi-Fi hotspot.

     Windows Media Player 11 - Another free solution, and a rather kick ass one if I may say, but it does lack one key feature: mufugga don't transcode, son. Unless you manually convert all your shizz (which will probably preserve the video quality far better than transcoding anyway), you're only going to be able to play what the PS3 natively supports. Bastards.

   * For Mac Users

     MediaLink - This is pretty much THE DLNA solution for Macs. pilable personally bought and use this, and testifies it's worth every fucking penny:
     pliable posted:

         "When I had my Windows PC, I used TVersity which was okay when it worked, and then MediaHome which was also okay, but both programs took a while to set up, and the way MediaHome displays file/folder hierarchy did not make any sense at all. With MediaLink, it literally took me 1 minute to go from downloading the software, to having it completely set up and ready to go. The PS3 picked up everything and the file/folder hierarchy made sense! I sort of sound like a salesman for the site, and I swear to God I don't work for them, but you really should cough up the money for this if you run a Mac because it's awesome."

   * Linux Users
     Mediatomb. You're on linux, I expect you to be competent enough to figure this out.

   * Yellow Dog
     Some nice folks over at Yellow Dog have their own version of Linux that you can download and install yourself if you feel like goofing around with running your PS3 has a system. Currently there is no access to the RSX, so the system is only running with 256MB of RAM and no hardcore 3D capabilities, but that may change. If this sort of geeking out has you interested, we've got a thread just for you!

   * Ubuntu Linux
     ubuntu has gained alot of noteriety recently for being very user-friendly, and designed to make it as un-complicated as possible. That said, setup on a PS3 still requires a bit of knowledge, but psubuntu.com will help your ass out.

   * Online play on the PS3 is entirely free of charge.
     The PS3's online network, which includes multiplayer games, friends lists, messaging (video, voice and text chats), a web browser and access to the PlayStation Store are all free. Downloadable demos are free of charge, though they're not always regular. Sony has been getting their shit together and hopefully will start building a chain of weekly updates like Nintendo and Microsoft, but right now, it's a little random.

     The PlayStation Store is far more than just demos and microtransactions for games (or, uh, movie trailers by the fistful), however. Developers also have access to an API that lets them access the the store from the game, with each having it's own front end with just that game's products.

     Outside of games, the Store offers both standard and hi-def trailers for movies and games, PS one games (complete with digital manual and playable on both the PS3 and PSP, plus the saves can be shared between the two so you can continue on the go), and of course all those little add-ons and demos for released and upcoming games. It is assumed that if Sony can play nice internally, movies, TV shows and music will also be added. Of course, that's a big if.

   * Gaming with other Goons
     Once you've gotten your very own PS3, we have a couple different threads you can explore to get the most out of your system and shoot the shit with fellow Goons:

     -Official PS3Goons IRC channel is located at #ps3goons on irc.synirc.net.
     If you've never used IRC before, get mIRC and go here for help

     -The PlayStation Network ID list-
     Located away from unregistered prying eyes, you can pop in here to add any or all of our PSN IDs to your Buddy List. Max out that 50 buddy limit within seconds of going online!

     -The Official PlayStation Store Thread-
     Our very own Nail Rat decided to whip up a thread covering all the goodies available in the PS Store so you can figure out what you want before you even hop online. Demos, add-on content, PS one games and more are all listed and updated as the Store gets refreshed. Note: This thread requires archives. Nail Rat may or may not create a new thread.

     See you online!

   * The absolute latest firmware is version 2.35, which is quite exciting for all of us because with it came the new Playstation Store? Remember that old web based piece of shit? It is no longer! The new store is quite nice and sleek, much more navigable, and overall just a massive improvement over the last one. Download the latest firmware and give it a shot!

     [Click Here to view the patch notes on Sony's site]
     code:
     The PLAYSTATION®3 system software version 2.35 (with 2.30) update includes the following: * Redesigned PLAYSTATION®Store PLAYSTATION®Store has a new design and includes new features. Other new or revised features in version 2.35 (with 2.30): Game Game * New for 2.35: System stability during use of some PLAYSTATION®3 format software has been improved. Try and keep discussion in the thread civil. It's the PS3 thread, and obviously it's fine to make comparisons to the 360/Wii, but try and watch out and not get drawn into bickering over preferences. It's fine to discuss and it's even fine to argue as long as you remain reasonable and don't take shit personally (for the love of God, please). Also as said in the beginning, if you have some information I haven't covered that might be useful I'll add it to the first post.

A good chunk of this OP was taken from SamBishop's original posts, and either rewritten or left unmodified, so he deserves a lot of credit for getting this whole shebang started, and credit goes out to pliable for making the previous OP as entertaining as it was readable.

Miscellaneous PS3 Questions:

   * If I fucking replace the hard drive in my PS3 with a bigger one, will it void my warranty?
     Hell naw son. In fact, there is a section in Sony's manual which shows you exactly HOW to replace the hard drive. Pretty neato, eh? Don't bother with a Solid State drive though. It increases install times, while providing at most a 2 second boost in some scenarios.

   * I fucked up, and now my PS3 won't output video to my TV .
     If you happen to use the PS3 on another display or you just start messing with the settings and screw things up follow these simple instructions:

     1. Turn off your PS3.
     2. Power it on by holding the power button for at least 5 seconds. You will hear a delayed beep.
     3. Profit . The PS3 will automatically detect what it needs to output to, and at that point you should be prompted with a wizard. Follow it. To the land of Oz.

   * Where the fuck can I check to see if I'm in a beta?
     Head right on over here and log in with your PS Underground/G.A.P. ID.

   * Virtual fucking credit cards. Where can I get one of thems?
     http://www.entropay.com/ . EU people can use this to create credit cards that can be used in the United States (in our case, you can use it in the US PSN store). I'm not sure if you can use this to buy stuff in the EU or Japanese stores, so you'd have to go to the site and read the details.

   * My controller keeps fucking dying/locking up and coming back after 5 seconds of play, what the hell?
     If your controller is under a year old, and you have a receipt, call Sony and tell them exactly what is going on. Hell, even if it's older than a year, try calling them about it anyways. Sony is pretty bad ass when it comes to customer service for the PS3. There have been stories of people getting not one, but two free controllers for the trouble.

   * How can I do this crazy fucking "game sharing" thing everyone is talking about?
     Credit for this obviously goes to Onken:
     Onken posted:

         1) Change your PSN password to something simple, e.g. password1. Other person does the same.

         2) You then swap login details with the other person.

         3) Create a new user account on your PS3, and login with the information for the other person.

         4) Open the Playstation store and click "Download List" on the top right.

         5) You can now download anything the other person has ever downloaded from the store.

         6) When you've both finished downloading, logout and change your password back to whatever it used to be.

         - You can't delete the user account off your PS3, else the shared content won't work.
         - You can share your account with a maximum of 5 other PS3s.
         - If you no longer require someone else's shared content, it's a good idea to de-activate your machine from their account. To do this, login as the account you wish to deactivate and go Account Management -> Account Management -> Activate System -> Playstation 3 (This System) -> Deactivate System.

   * I heard about disabling PS3 accounts. What the fuck is that all about?
     To disable your account, go to the Friends section of the XMB, then Account Management > Account Management > Activate System > Playstation 3 (This System) > Deactivate System. The reason why you would want to do this is to free up a share of your PSN games. For example, let's say your PS3 fucks up somehow, and it requires a return to Sony. If you've downloaded a PSN game share with other friends or people, and your account is still activated with that PS3 system, that share can never be freed. So, in order to combat this, you simply deactivate your system before you exchange it, so the share frees up and you can get it from your friend again when you get your new system, or whatever. I believe you also would want to deactivate the system so you can free up your own account to re-register on your new PS3.

   * My router is one of those asshole Linksys WRT54G's. How the fuck can I get this thing to work with my PS3?
     The most common solution is to simply disable UPnP. If that doesn't work, try DMZing your PS3's IP. Those more tech savy can also inquire to Google about DD-WRT and Tomato custom firmwares for their router models.

   * Fuck dude, I'm getting these lines that are rolling up my screen. Is this the ground loop issue?
     That it is. To combat this, simply unplug the cable line going into your TV. Mmmkay provided a more thorough explanation as to why this happens though, along with another solution:
     Mmmkay posted:

         It's because the PS3 uses an IEC 3 pronged (grounded) socket for power, where most conventional home AV goods use 2 (ungrounded). You can buy 3-to-2 pronged power adapters at most electronic stores, this is probably the quickest and easiest way to eliminate the problem.

   * Looking to play some fucking Guitar Hero on your PS3?
     Due to some loveliness on RedOctane and Harmonix' part, the official guitars and the games like to got all screwy when they think they're not plugged directly into each other. Combined with the fact that emulating PS2 games on the PS3 requires a press of the PlayStation button on the SIXAXIS and that adapters apparently don't report the controller as the "official" one to the game, things have been... complicated. Though there are a handful of adapters that work fine with GH1, GH2 has been a little more difficult.

     Apparently, though, folks have had limited success with the RadioShack adapter:
     yammosk posted:

         Radioshack has a PS2 to USB adapter (~12$US)

         I've tested it in GH2, and here are the results:
         - Hammer Ons / Pull Offs work
         - Tilt works
         - Strum Bar is reversed (UP is DOWN, etc)
         - Wammy Bar does not work

     It's suggested to plug in the guitar controller after you boot into the game.

Here Follows the list of various Games, Upcoming and Memorable. This isn't an encyclopedia for all PS3 games though.

What's out? <---- If you have a PS3, you should play these if not own them.

   * Metal Gear Solid 4
     Release: June 12, 2008 | From: Konami, Kojima Productions | Video: TGS 07

     It got 10/10 on sites around the web. It got it's own PS3 bundle as a third party exclusive. I don't think I have to tell you the hype around this game is unbelievable, and it's completely deserved. If you have a PS3, you owe it to yourself to experience this.

   * Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
     Release: November 16, 2007 | From: Naughty Dog, Sony | Video: Massive Attack Trailer

     I've personally beaten this game about 3 times on different difficulties. It's a 3rd person shooter with platforming elements and fairly challenging AI. The game's story is well done, and the characters have a life to them thanks to their in-game quips and actions. The best comparison that can be made is that it's like playing an Indiana Jones movie.

     Ratchet and Clank

     Resistance

     Warhawk

   * Gran Turismo 5: Prologue

     MotorStorm

   * Heavenly Sword

   * Folklore

What's Coming? <---(I will make a fancy font graphic for this like the others later)(pics in a minute)

   * WipEout HD
     Release: June 2008 | From: Studio Liverpool, Sony | Video: Trailer, Gameplay trailer

     A gorgeous re-imagining of the best tracks from Wipeout Pure and Wipeout Pulse on the PSP. Full 1080p at 60fps, the textures and models have been re-built from the ground up. It will feature 16-player online racing and will be offered only on the PlayStation Store. They've said this title will serve as a stopgap until they release the full Wipeout PS3 game in (expected) 2009.

   * SOCOM Confrontation
     Release: September 2008 (delayed from Winter 2007) | From: Slant Six, Sony | Video: Trailer

     Much like Wipeout HD, this is a stopgap title to give people their SOCOM fix while the real SOCOM sequel cooks in the oven. This has been described as service to the extremely loyal fanbase of the first two games (apparently the third SOCOM was a travesty in the eyes of the hardcore and they want to make it up to them), so it will include revamped classic maps which I know nothing about but it still looks fun

   * LittleBigPlanet
     Release: October 2008 | From: Media Molecule, Sony | Video: Debut on-stage demonstration, Trailer

     Basically a sidescroller sandbox, you and three other people (online and/or offline) will join the same game and create your own obstacles, customize your characters, and share what you've made with the rest of the world if you think it's good enough. Download other peoples' creations, rate them, etc. The Rube Goldberg-esque creations seen in the trailers are enough to make you salivate at the possibilities

   * Resistance 2
     Release: November 4th, 2008 | From: Insomniac, Sony | Video: GTTV Segment

     Revealed in the February 2008 Game Informer, Resistance 2 will feature a full single-player campaign, a full separate co-op campaign playable with up to 8 people on- or offline, and 60-player multiplayer with class-based squad-based combat with vehicles. Basically this game is insanely huge and ambitious, the fact that Insomniac is behind it is what you should be excited about (expect it to deliver (because it will))

   * Valkyria Chronicles
     Release: November 2008 | From: Sega | Video: Gameplay, Trailer

     This is a really interesting mix of an action game and a tactical RPG. You basically control your troops' movement from above (like a typical tactical game), but then you also control them with a third-person view and aim their guns and fine-tune where you want them to take cover, so that's pretty neat. Plus it's got a really unique art style

   * MotorStorm: Pacific Rift
     Release: November 2008 | From: Evolution Studios, Sony | Video: Teaser trailer

     The first MotorStorm had a heck of a lot going for it but ultimately felt like it should have cooked in the oven just a little longer. So here is MotorStorm 2 which will hopefully fix the issues from the first game and provide a truly killer racing game. Four player split-screen, 16-player online races, a new vehicle class (monster trucks) and a new tropical setting are the key additions, this is one to keep an eye on if you even remotely enjoyed the first game.

   * Fallout 3
     Release: Quarter 4, 2008 | From: Bethesda Softworks | Video: Debut trailer
     "This intro. This intro never changes." That's all I know about this game! Apparently some people are upset because it won't be faithful to the original games or something. It looks pretty though.

   * Brutal Legend
     Release: 2008 | From: Double Fine, Sierra | Video: Debut trailer
     From the developer behind Psychonauts, this time around they will feature Jack Black in their game and hopefully it will actually sell! I'm not too well-read on this game but from what I gather, it's heavy on action. And probably heavy on humor which is always a good thing. It's also dripping with character.

   * Yakuza Kenzan!
     Release: Currently available in JP, elsewhere in 2008? (Two demos on Japanese store) | From: Sega | Video: Trailer (featuring Japanese rap!)

     The first two Yakuza games were set in the modern day but this third one will go back to the Feudal Japanese era where you use katanas and fight samurais and crap. Graphics look great, gameplay looks like about what you'd expect, and the fact that Yakuza 2 is getting a domestic release is a good sign that this might follow as well.

   * Afrika
     Release: August 2008 (JP) | From: Sony | Video: Trailer
     Not much is known about this game except that it's basically a re-imagined Pokemon Snap where you ride around in a Jeep and take pictures of animals. Whatever

   * Disgaea 3
     Release: August 6th, 2008 | From: Nippon Ichi Soft

   * Siren: Blood Curse
     Release: Quarter 3, 2008 | From: Sony

   * Tekken 6
     Release: 2008(?) | From: Namco | Video: Trailer
     More characters, better graphics and gameplay tweaks, you know how fighting game sequels go. This one is being built with the PS3 as a base which means we can safely expect a quick and accurate port, not to mention online functionality if Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection is any indication

   * Nobi Nobi Boy
     Release: 2008(?) | From: Namco | Video: On-stage demonstration
     This is the next game from the creator of Katamari Damacy, the gameplay demonstration linked above is the only footage shown and it certainly raises more questions than it answers. We don't know if that was just a tech demo or indicative of the full game or what, but he has a great track record and this looks too bizarre to ignore

   * Killzone 2
     Release: February 2009 (beta expected) | From: Guerilla Games, Sony | Video: Gameplay, Technology demonstration, In-engine trailer

     The original Killzone was apparently pretty meh, but Killzone Liberation on the PSP was excellent and all the video we've been shown of this sequel also looks quite good. They're implementing a fleshed-out version of the cover system found in Liberation where you 'attach' to the wall, and they're planning an online beta near the middle of the year.

   * Street Fighter IV
     Release: Early 2009 | From: Capcom | Video: Near-final trailer
     So, think of this as Street Fighter II 2. The original 8 characters return, the bosses return and 4 new characters are introduced. The gameplay is both simplified and expanded, there aren't true parries anymore but there's now a "Revenge" meter in addition to the usual Super meter which, by all accounts, seems to be a great addition and works well. Expect home versions to include characters not seen in the arcade version (rumors indicate characters from Super such as Fei Long).

   * Resident Evil 5
     Release: 2009 | From: Capcom | Video: Gameplay (kinda), Trailer
     We have seen a few videos of the game and it seems to be largely an evolution of RE4. Over-the-shoulder aiming (though we're not clear on whether or not you can move and aim simultaneously), more enemies on-screen and now we have a sidekick. Apparently it will be co-op too!

   * White Knight Chronicles
     Release: 2009 | From: Level-5, Sony | Video: TGS07 gameplay, Developer interview, Original trailer
     The main draw of this RPG is its unique combo-linking system. You basically open up the menu and link together the different moves you'd like to perform into a combo, so: Attack, Attack, Fire, Air Launch, Blizzard or whatever. There is some timing element involved which I don't fully understand, but once you have your combos ready, you can flip through them on the fly and adapt to whatever type of enemy you're fighting. You also transform into giant robot things and customize your character (in case you're biased against ponytails). It was recently on the floor of TGS with a full demo so it's safe to expect the full game some time this year (at least in Japan, hopefully elsewhere too though)

   * Bionic Commando
     Release: 2009 | From: GRIN, Capcom | Video: Debut trailer, Trailer
     These guys don't have an especially long or impressive resume but they're the ones remaking Bionic Commando (from the NES days). The intial trailers look pretty neat, let's just hope they can pull it off. It's a little concerning that he doesn't move around when grabbing an object, though

   * Prototype
     Release: 2009 | From: Radical Entertainment, Sierra | Video: Gameplay Trailer, Gameplay (beginning at 23:00), Debut trailer
     From the developer behind Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, this looks like another sandbox game with superpowers. The emphasis appears to be heavy on the parkour aspect, you move and jump very quickly and there is a constant swarm of enemies around you at all times. Pretty interesting stuff, though they recently announced that they've axed the multiplayer portion of the game. Heads up if that's a big deal to you

   * inFamous
     Release: 2009 | From: Sucker Punch, Sony | Video: Debut trailer
     We've only seen the debut trailer for this, but it's from the developer behind the well-received Sly Cooper series on PS2 so they have a good pedigree. From what we can gather, it appears to be akin to Crackdown where you have superpowers in a sandbox environment. It looks interesting and is something to keep an eye on

   * The Last Remnant
     Release: 2009 | From: Square Enix | Video: Trailer, Trailer
     This is Square Enix's attempt at making a game that appeals to both Western and Eastern audiences. They say it will launch in the US and Japan simultaneously, on both the Xbox 360 and PS3, and you will also be able to choose between two different main characters depending on how Japanophile or Nascarloving you are. Not too much is known about the gameplay other than what you see in the videos, though

   * Final Fantasy XIII
     Release: 2009 | From: Square Enix | Video: Extended trailer
     We've only seen various extended versions of the same trailer for nearly two years but we've been able to gather a bit of information on it: They want the battles to look like Advent Children, there is a sort of queueing system somewhat similar to White Knight, there is a girl in the game. And also a guy that looks like Seifer.

   * Final Fantasy Versus XIII
     Release: 2009(ish) | From: Square Enix | Video: Extended trailer
     From what we've been told, the Kingdom Hearts team is going to be working on this and it will be an Action RPG much like that series. All we have seen is the trailer linked above, however.

   * God of War 3
     Release: 2009? | From: Sony
     Nothing wholly official on this but it's been spoken of in unofficial terms. We know they're working on it and that it will be awesome.
